Hawley Creek, Lower Campground

Open

Open for the season as of May 15. No reservations required; first-come, first-served. No potable water available; campers must bring their own.

About

Hawley Creek Lower Campground sits at the base of the Beaverhead Mountains in the Salmon-Challis National Forest, providing a quiet basecamp for anglers and hikers exploring this remote corner of eastern Idaho. The campground has 4 primitive sites with vault toilets but no potable water, so campers must bring their own water supply. Fishing is the main draw here, with opportunities in Hawley Creek and the reservoir. The Hawley Creek Trail, while less than 2 miles long, is quite challenging with over 1,000 feet of elevation gain. ATVs and motorcycles are permitted on the trail but not off-trail. A spur trail connects to the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail for those seeking a longer backcountry experience. Access requires navigating dirt Forest Service roads, making this campground better suited for those with high-clearance vehicles or smaller camping setups. The remote location and lack of fees make it an appealing option for self-sufficient campers seeking solitude.

Directions

From Leadore, go 0.25 mile east on ID-29, turn right onto Hawley Creek Road and go approximately 6 miles to the junction with Forest Service Road 275. Follow Road 275 east for 4 miles up Hawley Creek. Turn left into the campground.
