About

Hawley Creek Upper Campground is a quiet, primitive campground tucked into the mountains of the Salmon-Challis National Forest, approximately 8 miles southeast of Leadore, Idaho. The campground features 6 well-spaced sites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets are available, but campers must bring their own drinking water and pack out all trash. The area offers excellent fishing opportunities in Hawley Creek and the nearby reservoir. For hikers, the Hawley Creek Trail begins near the campground and climbs over 1,000 feet in elevation across its 2-mile length, eventually connecting to a spur trail that reaches the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. The trail is open to motorized vehicles including ATVs and motorcycles, though off-trail travel is prohibited. This is a rustic, no-fee campground operating on a first-come, first-served basis. The remote setting and lack of amenities make it ideal for those seeking solitude and a true backcountry camping experience.

Directions

From Leadore, follow Highway 29 east for 1.25 miles, then turn right onto the county dirt road. Continue 6 miles to the junction with Forest Service Road #275. Follow Road #275 east for 4.5 miles up Hawley Creek to the Upper Campground on the right.
