About
McKethan Pavilion is a day-use recreation area located in the Headquarters Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest in Hernando County, just north of the Withlacoochee Visitor Center on US-41. The facility features three reservable pavilions accommodating groups of 40 to 50 people, making it a popular venue for weddings, family reunions, and other special events. Each pavilion includes grills for cooking, and the facility provides restrooms with sidewalk access from Pavilion A. The area sits on the shores of McKethan Lake, which has been designated as a bird sanctuary, providing excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing. Visitors can enjoy a two-mile nature trail that winds through the forest and a two-mile paved loop popular with hikers and bikers. A dirt boat ramp provides access to the lake for canoes, kayaks, and other non-motorized vessels. The site also includes a playground area for children and numerous picnic tables throughout the grounds. Withlacoochee State Forest spans over 165,000 acres across five counties and features diverse habitats including open pine sand hills, dense woodlands, and canopied trails. The forest is home to bald eagles, fox squirrels, gopher tortoises, white-tailed deer, and wild turkeys. The facility is open for day use only from sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, with closure times adjusted throughout the year. No pets or alcohol are permitted on the grounds.
