About
Colonel Robins Group Area is situated within the Headquarters Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest in Hernando County, approximately 6 miles from Brooksville. This group camping facility offers a peaceful, secluded paradise set back off the road, making it a popular destination for both youth and adult groups. The site features hammock stands for 4 hammocks, restrooms, picnic tables equipped with lantern hangers, and a large fire ring with a grate. Withlacoochee State Forest spans across 5 counties and exceeds 165,000 acres, featuring the Withlacoochee River, Little Withlacoochee River, and Jumper Creek, all designated as Outstanding Florida Waters. The forest landscape includes open pine sand hills, dense woodlands, and canopied roads and trails with diverse tree species including slash pine, longleaf pine, pond and bald cypress, maple, southern magnolia, hickory, and various oaks. In 1999, the forest was ranked #1 on the World Wildlife Fund's "10 Coolest Places You've Never Seen in North America." The group area accommodates 9-25 people and provides access to miles of trails for hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, and paddling throughout the forest. The surrounding area offers excellent habitat for wildlife including bald eagles, fox squirrels, gopher tortoises, white-tail deer, and turkeys. No pets are allowed at this facility, and alcohol consumption or possession is prohibited.
