Hog Island Youth Group Camp is a primitive camping area located in the Croom Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest in Sumter County, Florida, approximately 15 miles from Brooksville. The camp is situated near the bank of the Withlacoochee River, designated as an Outstanding Florida Water, providing a peaceful setting for paddling and fishing activities.
This facility is restricted to organized youth groups only, including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and church groups. The area can accommodate two separate groups of 25 people each, or a single group of up to 50. Amenities include two large fire rings, picnic tables, and access to a bathhouse with restrooms. The camp offers water-only, non-electric tent camping.
Recreational opportunities include hiking on nearby trails, wildlife viewing, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking on the Withlacoochee River. Firewood may be available on-site for donation to Friends of Florida State Forests. Campers should be aware that prescribed burning may occur in the area and should contact Withlacoochee State Forest Dispatch at 352-797-4100 before their outing.
