About
Hog Island Campground is located within the Croom Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest in Sumter County, approximately 15 miles from Brooksville. Positioned on the bank of the Withlacoochee River, this peaceful campground serves as a paddlers paradise and offers excellent access to the river's designated Outstanding Florida Waters. The campground features 20 standard sites for RVs or tents and one unique paddle-in only tent site, making it ideal for both traditional campers and paddling enthusiasts. The Withlacoochee State Forest spans over 165,000 acres across five counties and was ranked number one on the World Wildlife Fund's "10 Coolest Places You've Never Seen in North America" in 1999. The forest's landscape includes open pine sand hills, dense woodlands, and canopied trails, with tree species ranging from slash and longleaf pine to cypress, maple, and various oaks. Wildlife is abundant, with opportunities to spot bald eagles, fox squirrels, gopher tortoises, white-tailed deer, and turkeys. The campground provides access to fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking trails, and seasonal hunting in surrounding areas. Each campsite includes water, a picnic table, and a fire ring with grate or grill, with a bathhouse and dump station available for campers.
