About

McCown Valley is situated on Whitney Lake along the main channel of the Brazos River in Central Texas, offering 104 campsites ranging from basic tent sites to full hookup RV sites and screened shelters. The campground features 34 sites with water and 30-amp electrical hookups, 53 sites with water and 50-amp electrical hookups, 13 water-only sites, and five screened shelters. All sites include upright BBQ grills and ground fire rings. A major draw of McCown Valley is its extensive equestrian facilities, with dedicated horse camping near sites 66-104 that include multiple horse stalls and direct access to five miles of scenic equestrian trails winding through open pastures and wooded areas near the lake. The park also features one of only two swimming beaches on Whitney Lake, a large three-lane boat ramp, two restrooms with showers, horseshoe pits, and a dump station. Whitney Lake attracts over two million visitors annually who come to enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, canoeing, and kayaking. Anglers can target largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, and catfish with a valid Texas fishing license. The park is set among gently rolling hills covered with cedar, live oak, and post oak trees, with wildlife including deer and wild turkeys commonly spotted in the area.

From I-35 in Hillsboro, take Highway 22 west 12 miles to Whitney, exit Highway 933 north for 2.5 miles to FM 1713. Proceed 6 miles west, following signs into campground.
