About

Kimball Bend Park is an established Army Corps of Engineers campground located on the Brazos River at the northern end of Whitney Lake in Central Texas. The park offers 35 campsites, each equipped with 50 amp electrical service, making it particularly suitable for larger RVs. The river flows gently over sand and rocks at this location, providing excellent opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming, canoeing, and kayaking. Anglers can pursue various species including bass, crappie, and catfish. The campground holds historical significance as the famous Chisholm Trail passes directly through it. This historic cattle drive route carried upwards of ten million cattle northbound from southern Texas to Kansas and adjacent destinations between 1867 and the 1880s. Visitors can walk the trail and view several historic structures and ruins from the former town that once existed here. The surrounding landscape features rolling hills covered with cedar, live oak, and post oak trees. The nearby 12.5-mile Hopewell Trail is accessible for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, with connections to Lakeside Village and Powelldale Mountain to the south. The park is situated just off Highway 174, about 2.5 miles north of Kopperl or 22 miles south of Cleburne.

Directions

From Kopperl, travel north on Highway 56 for approximately 2.5 miles. Turn right on Highway 174 and continue approximately 2.3 miles. Turn left into the park just before the Highway 174 bridge. From Cleburne, travel south on Highway 174 for 22 miles. Turn right into the park after crossing the Highway 174 bridge.
