McConnells Mill State Park preserves 2,546 acres of the Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, designated a National Natural Landmark for its geological significance. The gorge was carved by glacial meltwater around 140,000 years ago, leaving behind massive boulders, sheer cliff faces, and dramatic rock formations. The park's namesake gristmill dates to the 1800s and is accompanied by a historic covered bridge, both of which can be toured seasonally. This is a day-use park and does not offer overnight camping. Activities center on the gorge's natural features: challenging rock climbing and rappelling routes draw technical climbers, while Class III-IV whitewater attracts experienced kayakers during high water. Multiple hiking trails traverse the gorge rim and valley floor, passing overlooks and waterfalls. Fishing for trout is popular in Slippery Rock Creek, though swimming is prohibited due to dangerous currents and slippery rocks that have caused multiple fatalities. Facilities include picnic areas, the Kildoo Pavilion (available for group rental), restrooms, and an electric vehicle charging station. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset year-round, though the historic mill has limited seasonal hours.

Directions

From I-79, take Exit 96 (US-422 West) toward New Castle. Continue approximately 2 miles, then turn right onto McConnells Mill Road. Follow signs to the park.
