McConnells Mill State Park in Lawrence County encompasses 2,546 acres of the spectacular Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, designated as a National Natural Landmark. Created by the draining of glacial lakes thousands of years ago, the gorge features steep sides and a valley floor littered with massive boulders. The park's centerpiece is a restored gristmill and covered bridge built in the 1800s, located at the bottom of the gorge. The park is primarily a day-use facility with no camping available. Slippery Rock Creek offers challenging whitewater conditions and excellent fishing for trout and largemouth bass, though the swift currents and rapids require extreme caution. The park features multiple hiking trails, scenic overlooks, waterfalls, and opportunities for technical rock climbing and rappelling on the gorge walls. Kildoo Pavilion is available for reservation for events and weddings. Located about 40 miles north of Pittsburgh via I-79 near the intersection of PA 19 and US 422, the park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, with the historic gristmill open on a limited schedule from Memorial Day through late September.
