About

Located adjacent to the Shenango Dam in Hermitage, Pennsylvania, the Mahaney Recreation Area Day Use facility provides four covered group picnic shelters operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The four shelters—Trails End, Spruce Cove, Skyline, and Rolling Meadows—each accommodate between 42-56 people depending on table use. Electric service (20-amp only) is available with paid reservations, and unreserved shelters are available first-come, first-served without electricity. Each shelter includes grills, and flush toilets with drinking water are provided at nearby restrooms during the operating season. The Mahaney Recreation Area offers extensive recreational amenities beyond the picnic shelters. An 18-hole disc golf course winds through the property, while the interpretive Seth Myers hiking trail begins near the Trails End shelter. Playgrounds are located near Spruce Cove shelter and the upper area near Skyline and Rolling Meadows shelters, which also features swing sets and a large soccer field. The facility provides direct access to Shenango Lake for fishing and boating, with a boat launch nearby. Shenango Lake stretches 11 miles along the Shenango River, covering over 11,000 acres surrounded by northern hardwood forests of black cherry, beech, maple, and hemlock. The lake is known for excellent fishing opportunities for crappie, bass, walleye, catfish, and muskellunge. Wildlife viewing is abundant with deer, turkey, osprey, and eagles frequently observed in the area. Nearby attractions include the historic Kidds Mill Covered Bridge and remnants of the Erie Extension Canal.
