About
McCain Guard Station is a rustic cabin constructed in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps that welcomes guests year-round to experience a remote mountain getaway. Perched in a valley at 6,900 feet elevation near a creek flowing into Little Greys River, the cabin is surrounded by pine-lined hillsides and open meadows. During summer, the site attracts hikers and horseback riders, while winter brings snowmobile enthusiasts who access the cabin via groomed trails. The cabin accommodates 8 people with 4 bunk beds and is equipped with propane heating, a propane cook top, and propane lights. No electricity or potable water is available on-site. An outdoor vault toilet is located separate from the cabin. The area offers excellent fishing in numerous creeks and the Little Greys River, and access to nearby trails including Big Springs Trail and the 9-mile Bailey Creek Trail along the designated Wild and Scenic Snake River Headwaters. Motorbikes are permitted on the nearby Telephone Pass trail from July 1 to September 10. Deer, moose, elk, eagles, and sandhill cranes are commonly seen, and wildflowers color the landscape in summer. Located within the 3.4-million-acre Bridger-Teton National Forest, part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the cabin sits 23 miles from Alpine, Wyoming, where the nearest services are located. Summer access is via low-speed gravel Forest Service roads, while winter access requires snowmobile.
