About
Barkshed Campground is a primitive camping area nestled along North Sylamore Creek in Stone County, Arkansas, within the Ozark-St. Francis National Forest. This historic site served as the old 'Barkshed Forest Camp' and was once the showcase destination for visitors to the forest. The campground retains its rustic character with a picnic pavilion at the top of the hill that was used for many forest events.
The campground offers both individual campsites and a group camping area in the lower section near the creek. Visitors can enjoy clear mountain stream waters, scenic views, fishing, swimming, and hiking opportunities including access to the North Sylamore Trail. The primitive nature of the campground means no electricity or potable water is available, and vault toilets are provided. The site is not recommended for large trailers or RVs due to the narrow gravel forest roads leading to the campground.
All sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis only, requiring visitors to physically arrive at the campground to purchase and claim a site. Payment can be made on-site using cash, check, or the Recreation.gov mobile app's Scan and Pay feature where available. The campground is open year-round, though winter access may be challenging depending on weather and road conditions.
