About

Matthews Creek Campground is a small, rustic campground nestled along the South Fork of the Salmon River in California's remote Klamath National Forest. With 10 campsites spread along the riverbank, the campground offers direct access to the river and several natural swimming holes, making it a destination for summer visitors seeking relief from the heat. The campground caters primarily to tent campers and those with smaller RVs given the narrow mountain road access via the Callahan-Cecilville Road. Recreational opportunities include swimming, non-motorized boating, fishing for salmon and steelhead, and wildlife viewing. The area is part of the Salmon River Wild and Scenic corridor. Facilities are basic with vault toilets and what is typically drinking water from faucets, though water availability can vary. The remote location approximately 37 miles from Callahan means campers should come prepared with supplies.

Directions

From Callahan, take Callahan-Cecilville Road for approximately 37 miles to the campground.
