About
Nordheimer Group Sites is a remote group campground located along the Wild and Scenic California Salmon River in the Six Rivers National Forest. The campground sits at 900 feet elevation in a mixed Douglas fir and hardwood forest, providing partial shade throughout the day. A few fruit trees remain from past homesteading activities, and a variety of wildlife inhabits the surrounding Salmon River area. The facility offers four primary group sites (A, B, C, and D), each accommodating up to 50 guests. Sites A, B, and C feature large grassy meadows surrounded by forest, while Site D overlooks the Salmon River with easy walking access for boaters and swimmers. A fifth overflow site (Site E) becomes available when the other four are reserved. Each site includes picnic tables and fire rings with grills, along with accessible vault toilets. The Salmon River corridor is popular for swimming, sunbathing, whitewater rafting, and kayaking. The Orleans Mountain Trail begins nearby, and the adjacent Marble Mountain Wilderness Area provides extensive opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and high-country fishing across 89 wilderness lakes. The narrow, winding access road with tight corners and sheer cliffs above the river makes this campground unsuitable for large RVs or trailers.
Directions
From Highway 96, turn onto Salmon River Road/Forest Highway 93 and continue about 13 miles to the campground. The first 7 miles are a narrow winding two-lane road. At Butler Creek, the second half narrows to one lane with tight corners and sheer cliffs high above the river.
