Sam A. Baker Equestrian Campground is a dedicated horse camping facility nestled within Sam A. Baker State Park in Missouri's St. Francois Mountains. This specialized campground features 21 sites offering both electric and basic camping options, all with water access. The shaded sites provide ample space for horse trailers and are conveniently located near multiple equestrian trailheads. The campground serves as an ideal base for exploring miles of horse trails that traverse the park's pristine wilderness, including the Mudlick Equestrian Trail system. The setting combines ancient mountains, towering hardwood forests, and the scenic beauty of the St. Francois River valley. While the equestrian campground does not have its own showerhouse or dump station, these facilities are available at the park's two main campgrounds nearby. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. The campground operates on a reservation system through Missouri State Parks, with reservations available up to 12 months in advance. Non-equestrian campers are also welcome to reserve sites at this peaceful campground, making it a versatile option for those seeking a quieter camping experience within the park.

Directions

From US-67, take the Hwy 34 exit west towards Piedmont for 3.8 miles. Turn right onto Hwy 143 towards Sam A. Baker State Park and continue for 6.4 miles. Drive through the state park, staying on Hwy 143, and cross the bridge over Big Creek. About half a mile after the bridge, turn right on County Road Wayne 318. Follow this road for approximately 1 mile; the campground will be on the right.
