About
Maplewood State Park Equestrian Campground is a specialized camping facility within the expansive 9,250-acre Maplewood State Park in west-central Minnesota. The campground features 24 sites tailored for horseback riders and their trailers, with each site equipped with a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and hitching rail or high line for securing horses. The campground serves as a base for exploring approximately 20 miles of horseback riding trails that wind through the park's characteristic sugar maple, basswood, and oak forests, over rolling hills and past eight major lakes. The equestrian campground provides essential amenities including access to water, primitive toilets, and manure bins or bunkers for proper waste management. Most sites accommodate one horse trailer or tent with up to two vehicles and a maximum of six people, though some larger sites can accommodate up to three vehicles. Some sites offer optional electric hookups for an additional fee. The park's diverse terrain offers riders scenic views of hardwood forests that transform into brilliant displays of fall colors, making autumn an especially popular time to visit. Reservations can be made up to 120 days in advance through the Minnesota DNR reservation system. Riders over age 16 are required to have a Horse Pass to use DNR-managed horse trails. Pets are permitted but must remain leashed and attended at all times both in camp and on the trail. Only approved firewood is allowed to prevent the spread of invasive species.
Directions
From Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, drive east on State Highway 108 for approximately 7 miles to reach the park entrance.
