Maplewood State Park Backpack Campsites

Open — The campground is currently open for reservations year-round. Water systems are shut off in mid-October, so winter campers must bring their own water supply.

About

Maplewood State Park offers three primitive backpack campsites for those seeking a more remote camping experience. These sites are accessed via the park's extensive trail network, which includes over 20 miles of combined hiking and horseback trails winding through diverse terrain. The park occupies a unique ecological transition zone between western prairies and eastern forests, resulting in rich biodiversity with 150 bird species, 50 mammal species, and 25 types of reptiles and amphibians. The landscape features characteristic rolling hills of the Leaf Hills region, part of the Alexandria Glacial Moraine, with elevation changes of up to 300 feet. Eight major lakes and numerous ponds dot the terrain, formed by retreating glaciers over 20,000 years ago. Sugar maple, basswood, and oak forests create spectacular fall color displays, while prairie wildflowers bloom throughout the growing season. Backpack campers should note that the park is open year-round, though winter camping requires preparation as all running water is shut off in mid-October. The park's remote backpack sites provide a true backcountry experience while remaining accessible from the main park entrance and trail system.
