About
Mallard Slough Cabin provides a remote basecamp for exploring the Stikine River delta and Stikine-LeConte Wilderness, located 22 miles from Wrangell. The 16x16-foot A-frame cabin features a loft, small deck, 2 single bunks, table, benches, wood stove, and wood shed with splitting maul. The cabin sits between tide flats and a spruce-hemlock forest with views of the delta. The surrounding area offers exceptional opportunities for kayaking, hiking, waterfowl hunting, and birdwatching. The Mallard Slough Trail begins behind the cabin and travels 2.7 miles to LeConte Bay, with the first 0.4 miles maintained and the remainder crossing marshy grassflats marked by posts. LeConte Glacier is accessible by boat at high tide, with icebergs visible in LeConte Bay and Frederick Sound. The Stikine River tidal flats serve as a major stopover for shorebirds and waterfowl during spring and fall migrations. Access to the cabin requires at least a 14-foot tide for shallow draft boats or 16 feet for float planes. Guests must bring their own bedding, cooking utensils, firewood, food, and water. Water is available from catchment but must be treated. Brown and black bears, bald eagles, owls, hawks, and moose inhabit the area. An outhouse is provided.
