About
Three Lakes Shelter is a historic three-sided Adirondack-style shelter located on Shelter Lake, a small lake positioned between Sand Lake and Hill Lake along the Three Lakes Loop Trail system in Tongass National Forest. Originally constructed in 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of President Roosevelt's New Deal programs, the shelter features a pole frame enclosed on three sides with cedar shakes, providing weather protection for trail users. The shelter was dismantled and carefully rebuilt in 2006, preserving its historic character while ensuring structural integrity. It sits on Mitkof Island approximately 14 miles southeast of Petersburg, accessible via the Three Lakes Trail system which has trailheads at the beginning of the Sand, Hill, and Crane trails off Three Lakes Loop Road. This is a day-use facility only and is not available for overnight camping or reservations. The Forest Service provides a rowboat at the shelter for visitors to access areas across the lake and for trout fishing. There are no restrooms, potable water, or other developed amenities at this backcountry location.
