About

Twin Lakes Cabin sits at the mouth of Twin Lakes Slough on the Stikine River within the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness. The 16x16 A-frame structure features a sleeping loft, partially covered front porch, two single bunks with a trundle bed, wooden table with benches, and an oil space heater requiring #1 stove oil. A 500-foot path connects the cabin to the Twin Lakes Picnic Site, a popular waterplay area with campfire rings and an outhouse. The surrounding landscape includes Sitka spruce, cottonwood, alder, and willow, with Figure 8 Lake (Twin Lakes) about 400 feet behind the cabin. Brown and black bears are common, moose inhabit nearby willow thickets, and the Stikine River tide flats are a major stopover for migratory waterfowl in spring and fall. Fishing opportunities include cutthroat trout from May through September and salmon species through summer. Access requires careful planning around river and tide conditions. A minimum 16-foot river level is needed for float plane landings, and a 14-foot tide is required for shallow draft boats to cross the tide flats. Helicopter access is prohibited in this designated wilderness. The river is typically ice-free from May through October. There is no cell service, electricity, or potable water; guests must pack out all trash.

Directions

Located on the north side of the Stikine River near Figure 8 Lake (Twin Lakes) in the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness, approximately 17 miles northeast of Wrangell. Access is by shallow draft boat or float plane during moderate to high river levels. Low river levels limit small boat access as Hooligan Slough becomes shallow or blocked. Contact Wrangell Ranger District at (907) 874-2323 for current conditions.
