About
Garnet Ledge Cabin provides rustic wilderness lodging on the mainland at the mouth of the Stikine River, 8 miles northeast of Wrangell. The 16x16-foot A-frame cabin features a loft, 2 single bunks, table, benches, and a wood stove for heat. A wood shed and splitting maul are provided, but guests must supply their own firewood, bedding, and cooking utensils. The cabin sits on flat land overlooking the Stikine River delta and tidal flats with a backdrop of moderately steep mountains. The surrounding Tongass rainforest consists primarily of Sitka spruce and western hemlock. Access requires careful planning due to tide conditions: shallow draft boats need at least a 15-foot tide, while float planes require 18 feet. The cabin is a popular stop for paddlers floating the Stikine River to Wrangell and serves as a base for exploring the delta. An unmaintained trail along the beach leads to Garnet Ledge, a garnet bedrock outcropping on private land held in trust for the children of Wrangell by the First Presbyterian Church. April brings anglers for the hooligan run, which also attracts Alaska's second largest concentration of bald eagles. Brown and black bears, moose, harbor seals, sea lions, and bald eagles inhabit the area.
