About

Garnet Ledge Cabin is a remote Forest Service rental cabin situated on flat land overlooking the Stikine River delta and tidal flats in the Tongass National Forest. Built in 1964, the 16x16 A-frame structure sleeps up to seven people and features two single bunks (one with a trundle bed), a second-floor loft, a table with benches, and a wood stove for heat. An outhouse and woodshed are on site, and the partially covered front porch has a bear-proof food storage locker. The cabin sits 8 miles northeast of Wrangell at the mouth of the Stikine River, approximately one mile south of Point Rothsay. Access is tide-dependent: boats require at least a 15-foot tide, while float planes need 18 feet to land. There is no potable water, cell service, or firewood provided. Guests must bring drinking water, sleeping bags, cook stove, cookware, lanterns, toilet paper, and garbage bags for pack-out. The surrounding rainforest is primarily Sitka spruce and western hemlock, with brown and black bears, bald eagles, sea lions, harbor seals, and moose in the area. An unmaintained beach trail leads to Garnet Ledge, a garnet bedrock outcropping on private land held in trust for the children of Wrangell by the First Presbyterian Church. Anglers can fish for hooligan during the April run, when Alaska's second largest concentration of bald eagles gathers at the river mouth.

Directions
