About

Gut Island 2 Cabin offers a unique wilderness experience on the Stikine River tideflats, a distinct departure from the typical Southeast Alaska rainforest setting. Built in 1967, this 12' x 14' hunter-style cabin is the older of two cabins on Gut Island, connected by trail and located within the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness. The cabin features 2 double bunks, 2 single bunks, a table, benches, and an oil stove that uses #1 stove oil only. The cabin is tucked into spruce and hemlock trees on a low rock outcrop between the tideflats and forest. The surrounding terrain is relatively flat with grass and shrubs covering the tideflats, and wildflowers prominent in May and June. The waters around the cabin are ideal for exploring by kayak or canoe during high tide, and the Stikine River tideflats serve as a major stopover for spring and fall bird migrations. Brown and black bears, moose, waterfowl, shorebirds, eagles, hawks, and owls are commonly seen in the area. Access requires careful planning around tides. Boat access generally requires a tide of at least 15 feet, while float plane access requires 17 feet or higher. The cabin is located 12 miles from Wrangell or 7 miles from the boat ramp on the south end of Mitkof Island. Guests must bring their own bedding, cooking utensils, stove oil, flotation devices, and water. Water is available from a catchment system but must be treated before use.

Directions

Located on Gut Island in the Stikine River delta, 12 miles north of Wrangell or 7 miles from the boat ramp on the south end of Mitkof Island. Accessible from Middle Arm or Dry Strait. The correct slough to the cabin can be difficult to determine. Consult local tide tables before arrival and departure.
