About
Sergief Island Cabin offers a distinctive Southeast Alaska experience on the Stikine River delta within the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness. Built in 1962, this 12x14 foot Pan Abode style cabin sits between tidal grass flats and a spruce-hemlock forest on the northwest side of Sergief Island. The cabin accommodates up to 4 guests with two single bunks and two double bunks, plus a table, benches, oil heater, and covered deck with a wooden cooler box. The surrounding landscape differs from typical Southeast Alaska rainforest, featuring flat terrain with grass, shrubs, willow, and alder. A small stream flows 75 feet from the cabin, with low forested hills rising behind. Wildflowers bloom prominently in May and June. The area supports brown and black bears, bald eagles, hawks, and moose, while the Stikine River tidal flats serve as a major stopover for waterfowl and shorebirds during spring and fall migrations. Access requires careful planning as tides dictate arrival and departure. A minimum 18-foot tide is necessary for shallow draft boat or float plane access. The cabin is located 10 miles from Wrangell or 10 miles from the boat ramp at Banana Point on the south end of Mitkof Island. High tide waters around the cabin are ideal for kayaking and canoeing, and the location is excellent for fall waterfowl hunting. Guests must bring #1 stove oil for heat, all water, sleeping gear, cooking equipment, and be prepared to pack out all trash. No cell service is available. Wilderness restrictions apply and helicopter access is prohibited.
