About

Gut Island 1 Cabin provides a unique wilderness experience on the Stikine River tideflats, tucked into spruce and hemlock trees on a low rock outcropping between the river delta and forest. Built in 1982, this 14x16 hunter-style cabin features two single bunks, two double bunks, a table with benches, a half-loft for additional storage, a small wraparound deck, and an oil stove for heat (No. 1 oil only, not provided). A second cabin, Gut Island 2, sits a few hundred feet away and is connected by trail. The surrounding terrain is relatively flat with grass and shrubs on the tideflats, and wildflowers are prominent in May and June. Brown and black bear, moose, waterfowl, shorebirds, eagles, hawks, and owls frequent the area. The Stikine River tideflats are a major stopover for spring and fall bird migrations, making this an excellent location for wildlife observation. Guests must bring all supplies including sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking stove, lanterns, cookware, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher, fire starter, and No. 1 stove oil. Water is available from a rainwater catchment but must be treated before use; bringing your own water supply is recommended.

Directions

Located on Gut Island adjacent to the western tip of Farm Island on the Stikine River delta. 12 miles by float plane or shallow draft boat from Wrangell, or 7 miles from the boat ramp on the south end of Mitkof Island. A short walk is required from the anchorage point to the cabin.
