About

Little Dry Island Cabin offers a secluded wilderness retreat perched on a low rock outcrop between tide flats and a forest of spruce and hemlock on the Stikine River Delta. The 16-by-16-foot modified A-frame cabin, built in 1980, features two single bunks (one with a trundle bed) and a second-floor loft that can accommodate up to seven people. The cabin includes a table with benches, wood stove, broom, and attached wooden cooler box for food storage, with an outhouse nearby. The cabin is located 12 miles by air or boat from Wrangell, or 7 miles from the boat ramp on the south side of Mitkof Island. Access is tide-dependent, requiring at least a 15-foot tide for shallow draft boats and a 17-foot tide for float planes, plus a short walk to the cabin. The Stikine River tidal flats surrounding the cabin are a major stopover spot for waterfowl and shorebirds during spring and fall migrations, making this an exceptional location for bird watching. The relatively flat terrain features grass and shrubs on the tide flats, with wildflowers prominent in May and June. Guests must be self-sufficient and bring their own firewood, water (or be prepared to treat water from the rain catchment barrel), cook stove, sleeping bags, pads, lanterns, cookware, utensils, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, and other necessities. The waters around the cabin are ideal for exploring by kayak or canoe during high tide. Brown and black bears, bald eagles, owls, hawks, and moose inhabit the area. Waterfowl hunting is possible in fall with proper permits.
