Big Springs - Caribou

Closed

The campground is currently closed for the season. Primary operating season runs late May through early September. After the main season closes, the campground remains open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with limited services and no water or restroom maintenance.

About

Big Springs Campground sits along the scenic banks of Pebble Creek at 6,500 feet elevation in Idaho's Caribou-Targhee National Forest. The campground is divided into two distinct loops: Loop A, shaded by towering Douglas firs, and Loop B, nestled in an aspen grove with picnic shelters. Site options include single, double, and triple standard sites, one large group site accommodating up to 175 people with a shelter, and two equestrian sites equipped with horse corrals and hitching racks. Pebble Creek provides excellent fishing for cutthroat and rainbow trout. The Big Springs Nature Trail offers an easy creekside walk, while the multi-use Boundary Trail departing from the campground accommodates hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, and OHVs, connecting to a network of local trails. Sagebrush, grasses, and wildflowers fill the landscape in summer. Lava Hot Springs is a popular day trip destination just 16 miles away, featuring natural hot springs soaking pools, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, water slides, diving platforms, disc golf, and Portneuf River tubing.
