Madison Campground

Closed — Closed for winter. Opens May 1, 2026 and operates through October 18, 2026. Reservations available through Yellowstone National Park Lodges. Camping is limited to 14 consecutive nights from July 1 through Labor Day, and 30 nights for the rest of the operating season.

About

Madison Campground sits at 6,800 feet elevation in a partly wooded area near the confluence of the Gibbon and Firehole rivers, which form the Madison River. With 278 individual sites and 3 group sites, it's one of Yellowstone's most popular campgrounds, offering the earliest opening and latest closing dates among the park's seasonal campgrounds. The campground accommodates tents, RVs up to 40 feet, and combination camping, with sites featuring picnic tables and fire grates. Fourteen comfort stations provide flush toilets, cold running water, and dishwashing areas. The location offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Early summer brings wildflowers and bison to nearby meadows, while September and October feature bugling elk. The Madison River provides quality fishing opportunities. The campground is strategically positioned 14 miles east of West Yellowstone and 16 miles north of Old Faithful, making it an ideal base for exploring the Upper, Midway, and Lower Geyser Basins. A small mercantile store sells camping supplies, firewood, snacks, and souvenirs. An amphitheater hosts evening ranger programs. There are no utility hookups, but a dump station is available during the operating season.
