About

Basin Station Cabin is a primitive, rustic, two-room structure located in the Hebgen Lake Ranger District of the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Built as a historic Forest Service station, the cabin sits in an open meadow in the Upper Madison River Valley with views of distant evergreen forests and mountain peaks on all sides. It is situated within a couple miles of the South Fork Arm of the Madison River and just down the road from Hebgen Lake. The cabin is accessible year-round, though access methods vary by season. During summer months, the cabin is directly accessible via Denny Creek Road. Winter guests must park at the Buttermilk Trailhead on Highway 20 and travel approximately three miles to the cabin by snowmobile, cross-country ski, or snowshoe. The adjacent road is heavily traveled during summer. Spring and fall access can vary significantly depending on road conditions. The area around Basin Station Cabin is grizzly bear habitat and also home to bison, elk, pronghorn, and other wildlife. The cabin is surrounded by hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking trails, as well as ATV/UTV and motorcycle routes subject to seasonal restrictions. Nearby Hebgen Lake offers fishing, boating, and hunting opportunities, with a public boat launch located about two miles away at Lonesomehurst Campground. The cabin is approximately nine miles from West Yellowstone, home of the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park.

Directions

Summer: From West Yellowstone, travel west on U.S. Highway 20 for approximately 6.5 miles. Turn right on Denny Creek Road and continue approximately two miles north. The cabin is on the right. Winter: From West Yellowstone, proceed west on Highway 20 for approximately 7.5 miles to Buttermilk Trailhead parking. Ski, snowmobile, or snowshoe one mile down Highway 20, then two miles along the trail to the cabin. Contact the Hebgen Lake Ranger District for spring and fall road conditions.
