About

Sam's Creek Campground offers a peaceful backcountry camping experience in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests, located near the Gospel-Hump Wilderness boundary. The small campground sits at 5,200 feet elevation in a grove of pine trees where Crooked Creek and Sams Creek converge, providing a scenic backdrop with the constant sound of running water. The campground has just three defined campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire grate. A vault toilet is available, but campers must bring their own drinking water or treat water from the nearby creeks. There is no trash service, so all garbage must be packed out. The remote location and limited facilities keep this site lightly used. Recreational opportunities include fishing in Crooked Creek, day hiking, backpacking into the Gospel-Hump Wilderness, OHV riding in summer, and snowmobiling in winter. The campground can serve as a base camp for big game hunting. Stock animals are not permitted. Access involves mostly gravel forest roads from Elk City.

Directions

From Elk City, travel 2 miles west on ID 14, then south on Forest Road 233 and FR 311 for approximately 30 miles. Turn north on Forest Road 222 and continue 1 mile to the campground.
