About
Located in southern Gloucester County along the York River, Machicomoco State Park Campground provides diverse camping options within a 645-acre landscape rich in natural and cultural resources. The campground features 27 campsites, with 13 offering electric and water hookups accommodating RVs up to 60 feet long, and 14 primitive walk-in tent-only sites for a more secluded experience. Three yurts with wooden decks provide a cross between tent camping and cabin comfort, sleeping up to four people with queen and twin beds. All campers have access to a modern bathhouse with hot showers. The park's setting encompasses diverse wildlife habitat from open fields to woodlands and waterfront marsh areas supporting deer, turkey, and numerous bird species. An open-air interpretive pavilion provides education on Virginia Indian culture and history, while 3.1 miles of paved trails and 2.4 miles of natural trails offer opportunities for walking, biking, and wildlife observation. A car-top boat launch provides access to Poplar Creek and the York River for paddling and fishing. The historic Timberneck site was associated with Powhatan's Chiefdom and features archaeological evidence dating back over 2,000 years.
