Lower Wind River Campground

Open

Open year-round. All sites are reservable through the Wyoming State Parks reservation system. Flooding can affect riverside areas during high runoff periods in spring and early summer.

About

Lower Wind River Campground occupies a scenic stretch of the Wind River at the northern edge of Boysen State Park, just downstream from where the river exits the Boysen Reservoir through a series of tunnels carved into the canyon walls. The area holds historical significance as the site of the original 1908 Asmus Boysen Dam, with portions of the structure still visible near the campground. The campground provides 39 sites spread across a grassy, tree-shaded area along the riverbank. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets serve the campground, and water spigots are distributed throughout for filling containers. The setting offers good fishing access along the Wind River, known for its brown and rainbow trout. Playground areas and volleyball courts are available seasonally. Boysen State Park as a whole centers on the 19,000-acre reservoir created by the modern Boysen Dam. The park provides boating, waterskiing, swimming, and wildlife viewing opportunities. The Wind River Canyon to the north showcases dramatic geology where the river cuts through the Owl Creek Mountains.

Directions

From Shoshoni, drive north on US-20 through Wind River Canyon. The campground entrance is approximately 8 miles north of Shoshoni on the west side of the highway, just past the tunnels.
