Alcohol Prohibitions

This Order describes acts that are prohibited upon lands, roads and trails within the National Forest System administered by the Forest Service Pacific Northwest Region in regards to alcoholic beverages.

Wilderness Permit Requirements

Wilderness permits are required when entering Glacier View, Indian Heaven, Mt. Adams, Tatoosh, Trapper Creek, Goat Rocks, and William 0. Douglas Wildernesses. Required Wilderness permits are free and self issued at trailheads.

Wilderness Restrictions

This forest order outlines restrictions in place in designated Wilderness areas to protect the vegetation around lakes, streams, and meadows, to reduce soil compaction and erosion in heavily used areas and to enhance the Wilderness character.

About

Lower Falls Campground is located in a pleasantly wooded setting on the Lewis River at an elevation of 1,750 feet in Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The campground features 43 sites including standard, double, and premium options, all tucked among large evergreen trees along a paved campground road. Sites accommodate both tents and RVs up to 36 feet, though no hookups are available. Each site includes a picnic table and campfire ring with grill. The campground serves as a trailhead for the Lewis River Trail #31, a multi-use trail popular with hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. The trail follows the Lewis River through old growth forest and past several striking waterfalls. The river itself is open to catch and release fishing for rainbow, cutthroat, and bull trout, as well as whitefish, and kayaking. Lower Falls Day Use Area is located within the campground. Waterfalls are a major attraction in this area, with viewing opportunities at Lower Lewis River Falls, Curly Creek Falls, Big Creek Falls, and Middle Falls all within 15 minutes of the campground. Lewis River Horse Camp is 5 miles away. Additional nearby trails include Quartz Creek Trail #5 and Wright Meadows Trail #80.

Directions

From Cougar, Washington drive east on Highway 503 for about 33 miles to the campground. Just past the Pine Creek Information Center keep right at the intersection with Forest Road 25, staying on Highway 503. At the forest boundary Highway 503 becomes Forest Road 90. Continue east on Forest Road 90 to the campground entrance on the right after mile marker 28.
