About
Lewis River Horse Camp is a specialized equestrian campground situated in the heart of Gifford Pinchot National Forest's Lewis River Recreation Area. This rustic facility caters specifically to horseback riders and features nine campsites, each equipped with a highline for securing horses. The campground can accommodate up to 10 trailers and 15 vehicles, making it suitable for groups traveling with stock. The campground serves as a trailhead for extensive mixed-use trail networks, including the popular Lewis River Trail #31 and Quartz Creek Trail, which wind through old-growth forest and past striking waterfalls. A stock-only water trough is available on-site for horses and other animals, though potable water for human consumption is not provided. The adjacent Platinum Creek Trailhead offers 16 day-use parking spaces, which require advanced reservations through Recreation.gov during the busy summer season from mid-June through early September. This is a primitive, first-come, first-served facility with minimal amenities. Visitors should come prepared with drinking water and be ready to pack out all trash. The campground sits at 1,800 feet elevation in a forested setting along Forest Road 93, accessible via Forest Road 90 from the town of Cougar.
Directions
From Cougar, Washington, drive east on Forest Road 90 past Lower Lewis Falls Campground to Forest Road 93. Turn left on Forest Road 93 and continue 1/8 mile to the horse camp on the right.
