About
Kennel Creek Cabin sits on the south shoreline of Freshwater Bay, approximately 19 air miles southeast of Hoonah on the northeast side of Chichagof Island. The 16x22-ft milled cedar log structure features a sleeping loft with a single-over-double bunk on the main floor, a balcony, and a deck overlooking the bay and surrounding snow-capped mountains. Dense evergreen forest backs the cabin, with Kennel Creek flowing into Freshwater Bay about 200 yards away. This is a primitive, off-grid cabin with no electricity, indoor plumbing, or cell phone coverage. A wood stove provides heat, and visitors must bring their own water, sleeping gear, cooking supplies, lanterns, and food. Outside amenities include a large picnic table, fire ring, vault toilet, and a firewood shelter. The first level, main deck, vault toilet, and picnic table are ADA accessible. The area offers abundant wildlife including whales, brown bear, deer, and shorebirds. A gravel beach fronts the cabin for launching small boats, and a nearby boat ramp and dock facility provide additional water access. The Bear Paw Lake Trail system is located approximately 4 miles northwest on Forest Road 8508.
Directions
From Hoonah, travel south past the airport. Where the road turns to gravel, drive 2 miles to the T intersection, turn right toward Freshwater Bay. Drive 25 miles on Forest Road 8502/8508, veering left at all Y intersections. The cabin is located at the end of a short access road on your left. Total gravel road distance is approximately 27 miles. Also accessible by floatplane or boat.
