About
Lockett Meadow Campground offers a true mountain camping experience in the heart of Arizona's highest peaks. Located at approximately 9,500 feet elevation within the San Francisco Peaks, the campground sits in a lush meadow surrounded by extensive stands of quaking aspen. The setting transforms dramatically with the seasons, from summer wildflowers to the famous golden fall foliage that draws visitors from across the state. The San Francisco Peaks are the remnants of an extinct volcano, and the Inner Basin Trail departing from Lockett Meadow leads directly into the ancient caldera. Wildlife sightings are common, including elk, porcupines, and occasional black bear. Hermit thrushes provide the soundtrack during summer evenings. This is a primitive campground with vault toilets but no potable water. The access road (Forest Road 552) is steep, narrow, single-lane, and rough, making it unsuitable for RVs and trailers. The road closes seasonally due to snow, typically from late fall through mid-spring.
Directions
From Flagstaff, drive northeast on US Highway 89 for 12.5 miles. Turn left on Forest Road 552, directly across from the Sunset Crater National Monument turnoff. Follow FR 552 for approximately one mile, then turn right at the Lockett Meadow sign and continue to the campground. The dirt road is steep, narrow, single-lane, and rough.
