Lockett Meadow Campground

Closed — Closed due to Forest Road 552 closure. The campground typically operates June through mid-October when conditions allow, but the access road has been closed indefinitely following the 2022 Pipeline Fire. The road also closes seasonally in early spring and late fall due to snow.

Lockett Meadow Campground sits at 8,544 feet elevation in the heart of the San Francisco Peaks, surrounded by quaking aspen stands and offering spectacular mountain views. This primitive campground features 17 first-come, first-served sites in a cool alpine setting where porcupine, elk, and black bear roam freely. The campground serves as the trailhead for the Inner Basin Trail, which leads into the caldera of an ancient volcano that formed the San Francisco Peaks. The meadow and surrounding slopes come alive with wildflowers in spring and summer, while fall transforms the extensive aspen groves into brilliant gold displays that attract visitors from across the region. This is a true mountain camping experience with no water, vault toilets, and rustic sites. The access road (Forest Road 552) is steep, narrow, and rough, making it unsuitable for RVs and trailers. Campers enjoy proximity to Kachina Peaks Wilderness for backcountry exploration and the opportunity to experience one of Arizona's premier high-elevation landscapes.

Directions

Drive northeast of Flagstaff on US Highway 89 for 12.5 miles. Turn left on Forest Road 552, directly across from the Sunset Crater National Monument turnoff. Follow FR 552 for approximately one mile, then turn right at the Lockett Meadow sign and continue to the campground. The road is steep, narrow, single-lane, and unsuitable for RVs or trailers.
