About

Bonito Campground is named for the Bonito Lava Flow that oozed across this high desert plain some 900 years ago. That river of liquid rock, now frozen forever, is just one of the many remnants of volcanic activity lending an otherworldly appearance to this starkly beautiful landscape. The campground sits at 6,900 feet elevation among tall Ponderosa pines, providing a restful setting to explore the unique geology of the area. The campground features 44 single-unit sites with paved roads and spurs. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and cooking grill. Facilities include flush toilets and potable water. Of the 44 sites, 22 are reservable through Recreation.gov and 22 are first-come-first-served. Motor homes and trailers over 42 feet are not permitted. One ADA-accessible site is available. The entrance to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument is adjacent to the campground. Nearby Wupatki National Monument features a four-story Native American stone masonry structure that once housed up to 125 people. Walnut Canyon National Monument is also within easy reach for exploring the region's rich cultural history.
