About
Kendrick Cabin is a retired U.S. Forest Service fire guard station constructed in the 1960s, now available for group rental in the Coconino National Forest. The rustic three-bedroom masonry and wood cabin sits at 7,910 feet elevation in Kendrick Park, at the base of the 12,000-foot San Francisco Peaks. Guests enjoy sweeping views of Kendrick Mountain and the surrounding ponderosa forest, along with exceptional dark skies for stargazing. The cabin accommodates up to 10 people and is equipped with a wood stove for heating (firewood provided), propane stovetop range, small refrigerator, dining table with chairs, and solar-powered lighting. A separate bathhouse with flush toilet and shower operates mid-May through mid-October; outside those dates, a vault toilet is available and guests must bring their own potable water. Cell coverage is limited to non-existent. The Kendrick Park Watchable Wildlife Trail is adjacent to the cabin, and dozens of hiking and mountain biking trails are a short drive away, including Kendrick Mountain Trail and trails on the San Francisco Peaks. The Grand Canyon South Rim is about an hour north, and downtown Flagstaff is 22 miles south via Highway 180.
Directions
From Flagstaff, drive approximately 20 miles north on Fort Valley Road/Highway 180. Look for the Watchable Wildlife Trail on the left and a roadside chapel on the right. Continue less than a mile past the chapel and turn right onto Forest Road 514. Go exactly one mile and turn left at the sign for Kendrick Cabin. The cabin is a half-mile further at the end of this road.
