Loafer Creek Campground

Open — Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Campgrounds are open 24 hours a day. Check-in is 2:00 p.m., check-out is 12:00 noon. Quiet hours are 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Maximum speed limit within the campground is 15 mph.

Loafer Creek Campground serves as the primary camping facility within Lake Oroville State Recreation Area, California's second-largest reservoir. The campground features 137 campsites arranged in loops on elevated terrain above the lake, providing scenic views of the surrounding oak-studded foothills. Sites accommodate both tent and RV camping, with paved driveways suitable for RVs up to 40 feet and trailers up to 31 feet. While no hookups are available, the campground provides full amenities including flush toilets, outdoor showers, drinking water, and a centrally located RV dump station. The recreation area was formed by Oroville Dam, the tallest earth-filled dam in the United States at 770 feet above the Feather River streambed. When at capacity, Lake Oroville encompasses 15,500 surface acres with 167 miles of shoreline. Loafer Creek facilities include a boat launch ramp, swimming beach, and day-use picnic areas. The campground also serves as a gateway to an extensive system of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. A separate 15-site horse camp with corrals, tethering stations, and horse-washing facilities caters specifically to equestrians. Fishing opportunities abound for largemouth and smallmouth bass, chinook salmon, catfish, mackinaw, sturgeon, and various trout species.

Directions

From Sacramento, take Highway 70 north for 68 miles to Highway 162. Turn east on Highway 162 and continue 9.5 miles to Loafer Creek Road. Turn left into the park entrance.
