Little Brooklyn Lake Guard
Closed
— Open year-round for reservation only. Currently accessible by snowmobile, skis, or snowshoes only, approximately three miles from Green Rock Recreation Area parking lot, as Highway 130 is closed for winter. Summer vehicle access typically available mid-June through early November, weather permitting.
About
Little Brooklyn Guard Station sits at 10,340 feet elevation in the Snowy Range, originally constructed in 1931 to house Forest Service employees. The historic cabin now offers year-round rental accommodations for visitors seeking alpine recreation and solitude. The structure measures 28x22 feet with three rooms, accommodating up to six people with two sets of bunk beds, one single bed, and a double sofa bed.
The cabin is heated by wood stove and equipped with propane lights and a propane cook stove. The Forest Service supplies propane and firewood (which requires splitting by guests). Drinking water is available from an outdoor pump during summer months, but guests must bring their own water or melt snow during winter when the pump freezes. A vault toilet, grill, and picnic table are located outside. The cabin has no running water or electricity.
Access varies dramatically by season. From mid-June through early November, the cabin is typically accessible by vehicle via Brooklyn Lake Road, weather permitting. During winter, Highway 130 closes three miles east of the cabin, requiring access by snowmobile, cross-country skis, or snowshoes from the Green Rock Recreation Area parking lot. Shoulder seasons can be challenging when snow is too deep to drive but insufficient for snowmobiling. The surrounding area offers exceptional hiking to Medicine Bow Peak (12,013 feet), fishing in nearby alpine lakes including Little Brooklyn Lake, and winter recreation opportunities.
Directions
From Laramie, take Highway 130 west through Centennial. Continue approximately nine miles west of Centennial to Brooklyn Lake Road (Forest Service Road 317) on the north side of the highway. The guard station is one mile up Brooklyn Lake Road. During winter when Highway 130 is closed, access via snowmobile, skis, or snowshoes from Green Rock Recreation Area parking lot.
