About
Sugarloaf Campground is one of the highest elevation campgrounds in the United States at 10,800 feet, located in Wyoming's Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. The 16 sites meander along a hillside surrounded by spruce and fir, with every site offering breathtaking views of the Snowy Range peaks reaching 12,000 feet. The campground provides a rustic experience with vault toilets, hand-pump potable water (typically available July through September), fire rings, and picnic tables.
The location is a fisherman's paradise with 102 recreational lakes nearby. Libby and Lewis Lakes, both within easy reach, contain brook trout and splake. Lewis Lake is annually stocked by Wyoming Game and Fish. Non-motorized watercraft are permitted but must be carried to the water's edge. Three popular hiking trails originate from the area, and the Savage Run and Platte River Wilderness areas offer more remote backcountry experiences to the south.
Due to the extreme elevation, visitors should consider acclimating at lower elevation for at least one night before camping here. There is little to no shade due to pine beetle infestation and hazard tree removal. The campground is 1.5 miles from the Libby Flats Observation Area and 43 miles west of Laramie via State Highway 130.
Directions
From Laramie, drive 43 miles west on State Highway 130. Turn north onto Forest Service Road 346; the campground is three-quarters of a mile on the right. From Saratoga, drive 39 miles east on Highway 130 to FSR 346.
