About
At an elevation of 10,800 feet, Sugarloaf Campground is one of the highest elevation campgrounds in the United States and the highest in the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. The 16 campsites meander along a spruce and fir-lined hillside, each offering panoramic views of the Snowy Range, which peaks at 12,000 feet. Due to the extreme elevation, pine beetle infestation, and removal of hazard trees, there is little to no shade at the campground.
The campground sits in the midst of a fisherman's paradise with 102 recreational lakes in the surrounding area. Two crystal-clear snow-melt lakes, Libby and Lewis, are easily accessible and contain brook trout and splake. Non-motorized watercraft can be used on these lakes, though you must carry your boat to the water's edge. Three popular trailheads of varying difficulty originate from this area, with Savage Run Wilderness and Platte River Wilderness nearby to the south for those seeking more remote experiences. The Libby Flats Observation Area is just 1.5 miles away.
