Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine Backpack Sites offer a true backcountry experience in northeastern Minnesota. These five remote hike-in campsites are located on a pristine ridgeline overlooking wooded valleys within the 3,000-acre state park. Each site is equipped with a fire ring, bear box for food storage, and access to vault toilets, providing essential amenities while maintaining a wilderness atmosphere. The backpack sites are accessible via hiking trails from the developed areas of the park, requiring campers to carry in all their gear. This creates a more secluded and peaceful camping experience compared to the park's drive-in campground. The sites are situated in old-growth pine forest terrain, typical of the Vermilion Range landscape. Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park is known for its combination of natural beauty and historical significance, featuring the historic Soudan Underground Mine, miles of Lake Vermilion shoreline, and extensive hiking trails. Directions

From Tower, Minnesota, take U.S. Highway 169 east and follow the signs to Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park. The park is located on the southern shore of Lake Vermilion, approximately two miles east of Tower. Be aware that GPS devices may not reliably guide you to the park's entrances; it's recommended to follow the posted street signs.
