About
Lake Sylvia Recreation Area sits in a scenic mountain setting in the northeast corner of the Ouachita National Forest, just 38 miles west of Little Rock. Originally developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936, this recreation area features an 18-acre lake surrounded by pine and oak-clad mountains. The campground offers 14 sites with water and electric hookups, primitive tent sites, and seven camper cabins with bathrooms. The recreation area provides a swimming beach with bathhouses, fishing opportunities, and an extensive trail system. Visitors can explore interpretive trails including the Trees of the Forest accessible trail with Braille signage and the Wildlife Trail. The Lake Sylvia Spur Trail connects campers to the Ouachita National Recreation Trail for extended backpacking adventures. Day-use areas with picnic facilities are available throughout the park. In 2023, management of Lake Sylvia transferred from the U.S. Forest Service to Arkansas State Parks, which has since made facility improvements. The park also includes the historic Camp Ouachita, featuring a Great Hall with massive log beams and stone walls. Interpretive programming is offered regularly, making this an ideal destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a peaceful mountain retreat.
Directions
