About

Lake Sylvia Recreation Area is nestled between scenic pine and oak-clad mountains in the northeast corner of the Ouachita National Forest, approximately 38 miles west of Little Rock. The centerpiece is a serene 18-acre lake noted for excellent swimming and fishing opportunities. The campground offers approximately 14 RV sites with water and electric hookups, seven primitive tent sites, and two group tent camping areas, along with seven camper cabins for those seeking more comfort. Originally constructed by the Works Progress Administration between 1936 and 1940, the area has been modernized while retaining its historic charm. Now managed by Arkansas State Parks, the recreation area features two bathhouses with flush toilets and hot showers, a swimming beach with changing facilities, picnic areas, and an amphitheater. The trail system provides opportunities for easy nature walks, challenging hikes, trail running, and gravel grinding, with connections to the Ouachita National Recreation Trail for extended backpacking trips. The campground atmosphere is peaceful and shaded by towering oaks and hickories. Interpretive programming is offered throughout the year. With Petit Jean State Park and Pinnacle Mountain State Park just 30 minutes away, Lake Sylvia serves as an excellent base for exploring the region. The park gates open at 6:30 AM and close one hour after sunset, with check-in and check-out at 3:00 PM.
