About
Cherokee Park is an Army Corps of Engineers campground located on the Arkansas River in Morrilton, Arkansas. The park sits along the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, a series of navigation pools used to help ships navigate upstream toward Oklahoma. The Arkansas River is one of the Mississippi's largest tributaries, flowing 1,450 miles from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado through Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
The campground offers 33 spacious Class A campsites equipped with 30 or 50 amp electric hookups and water connections. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and grill. Facilities include flush restrooms with hot showers, a dump station, boat ramp, dock, playground, and two large group picnic shelters available for reservation. Wintering bald eagles can be seen in large numbers along the Arkansas River from November through February, with most migrating from Canada and the Great Lakes region.
The park holds historical significance as part of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, where flat boats crowded with Cherokee and Creek people passed during their forced relocation. Nearby attractions include Petit Jean State Park, Harris Break and Holla Bend Wildlife Management Areas, Lake Dardanelle, and the antique shops of Greenbrier.
