About
Lake Colorado City State Park spans 500 acres in the arid West Texas landscape between Midland and Abilene, centered around a 1,618-acre impoundment of Morgan Creek with 5 miles of shoreline. The park provides a respite from the dry climate, drawing both wildlife and visitors to its waters. More than 300 bird species have been sighted here, making it a premier birding destination in the region. The park offers 112 total campsites across three categories: 9 pull-through sites with water and electricity, 69 standard sites with water and electricity, and 34 sites with water only. All camping areas have access to restrooms with showers. The park also features 11 air-conditioned cabins, a group hall, and pavilion facilities. Activities center around the lake and include fishing for largemouth bass, channel catfish, and sunfish from the boat ramp or fishing pier, swimming, kayaking (rentals available), and paddling. Lakeside hiking trails provide scenic water views and wildlife watching opportunities. The park has a camp store and offers ranger-led programs on nature and history. The lake occasionally experiences algae blooms that may affect fishing conditions or result in temporary closures. Park gates are open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with the headquarters office staffed 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
