About
Copper Breaks State Park encompasses 1,899 acres of rugged North Texas terrain in Hardeman County, approximately 12 miles south of Quanah. The park preserves the landscape where early Americans, including the Comanche, camped for thousands of years. Today, visitors can explore red rock canyons, grass-covered mesas, and quiet water bodies while experiencing some of the darkest night skies in Texas. The park offers diverse recreation opportunities including 10 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, with routes like the challenging Juniper Ridge Nature Trail providing stunning views of the red rock landscape. Lake Copper Breaks and Big Pond offer fishing without a license required, swimming in a designated area, and small boat access at a no-wake zone. The 3.8-mile Equestrian Trail winds through canyons and mesas, with dedicated equestrian campsites available. Members of the Official State of Texas Longhorn Herd roam the south pasture near the park entrance. Designated as an International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association, Copper Breaks provides exceptional stargazing opportunities. The park offers monthly star parties from April through November and other night sky programs throughout the year. An interpretive center at park headquarters features natural and historical exhibits. With its remote location and varied landscapes, Copper Breaks remains one of Texas's least-visited but most rewarding state parks.
