Copper Breaks State Park

Open

Open with limited water availability due to water plant upgrades. Only the Javelina area restroom is operational; water is turned off to campsites. Bring drinking water and fill RV tanks before arrival. A burn ban is in effect: no wood fires, but charcoal and containerized fuel stoves are permitted. The water/electric campground will close September 1, 2026 through January 1, 2027 for construction.

About

Copper Breaks State Park encompasses 1,899 acres of rugged North Texas terrain once roamed by Comanche bands. At 1,568 feet elevation, the park features dramatic overlooks, mesquite-covered hills, and two quiet water bodies: Lake Copper Breaks and Big Pond. The park earned International Dark Sky Park designation, making it exceptional for stargazing and astrophotography far from urban light pollution. The Comanche Camping Area offers 24 sites with water and 30/50-amp electric hookups, fire rings with grills, and picnic tables. The Kiowa Camping Area has 11 tent-only sites with water hookups and nearby restrooms with showers. Equestrian camping at Big Pond includes 14 sites with water, a large watering tank for horses, and access to the 3.8-mile equestrian trail (negative Coggins test required). Six primitive hike-in sites sit about 0.8 miles from parking near the dam. Activities include hiking and mountain biking on multiple trails, fishing without a license at both water bodies, swimming in designated areas (no lifeguard), kayaking and canoeing, and ranger-led astronomy programs. The park museum features exhibits on natural and cultural history.
