About

Caprock Canyons State Park and Trailway showcases the dramatic geological transition where the flat High Plains give way to the eroded canyons and mesas of the Rolling Plains. The park's 15,000+ acres encompass colorful red rock formations, seasonal waterfalls, and diverse ecosystems ranging from shortgrass prairie to juniper woodlands. The park serves as the permanent home of the official Texas State Bison Herd, descendants of the legendary Goodnight herd that once roamed these lands. The park offers diverse camping options to suit different preferences. The Honey Flat camping area provides developed sites with water and electric hookups (30 and 50 amp), shade shelters, and nearby restrooms. Lake Theo offers walk-in sites with water access overlooking the small lake. For those seeking a more primitive experience, the Little Red, South Prong, and backcountry areas provide tent camping with minimal amenities. The 64-mile Trailway, built on an abandoned railroad grade, connects the park to South Plains and offers remote camping for long-distance hikers and bikers. With its 2026 Dark Sky Park designation, Caprock Canyons has become a premier destination for stargazing. The park's remote location in Briscoe County provides exceptionally dark skies, and the visitor center hosts astronomy programs. Beyond camping, visitors enjoy swimming and fishing at Lake Theo, extensive trail systems ranging from easy to challenging, and wildlife watching opportunities for bison, pronghorn, and numerous bird species.
