Raccoon Campground is part of the East Fork Recreation Area, located in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest near Alpine, Arizona. Situated at 7,600 feet elevation along the East Fork of the Black River, the campground was purposefully developed to replace campsites that had been located too close to the creek, helping to protect the Black River's unique riparian ecosystem. The campground is nestled in a forested valley shaded by tall ponderosa pines and surrounded by grasses, alders, and streamside hardwoods. While campsites are positioned a few steps back from the stream to protect the sensitive riparian zone, access to the river remains easy for fishing and enjoying the water. The East Fork meanders through this scenic area, offering excellent trout fishing opportunities and picturesque views. This is a small, rustic campground operated by a concessionaire. Sites feature rock fire rings and picnic tables, and vault toilets are available on-site. There are no utility hookups or potable water (water is removed seasonally, typically by mid-October). The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis and does not accept reservations. The East Fork Recreation Area extends 8 miles along the Black River and includes several other campgrounds, making it a popular destination for anglers, families, and those seeking a peaceful mountain retreat. The area is accessed via wide, graveled forest roads from Alpine, located about 13 miles to the northeast. Sites are relatively small, and only a few can accommodate large motorhomes or travel trailers.

Directions

From Alpine, drive two miles north on US Highway 191 to Forest Road 249. Turn west and follow this wide, graveled road for 5 miles to Forest Road 276. Turn south and follow Forest Road 276 for 6 miles to the East Fork Recreation Area and Raccoon Campground.
