Raccoon Campground
Open seasonally, typically May through October. First-come, first-served only; no reservations. Water systems may not be operational early in the season.
About
Raccoon Campground is nestled along the East Fork Black River in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, where the river meanders through a forested valley shaded by tall ponderosa pines and bordered by grasses, alders, and streamside hardwoods. At 7,600 feet elevation, the campground offers a cool mountain retreat in Arizona's White Mountains region. The campground was developed to replace some campsites that were located too close to the creek, providing a more sustainable recreation experience. Sites include vault toilets, picnic tables, and rock fire rings. This is a first-come, first-served campground with no reservations accepted. Access is via gravel and dirt forest roads. The East Fork Black River offers stream fishing opportunities. The campground is part of the East Fork Recreation Area, which stretches along the river corridor with multiple campgrounds and day-use areas.
Directions
From Alpine, drive two miles north on US Highway 191 to Forest Road 249. Turn west and follow this wide, graveled road 5 miles to Forest Road 276. Turn south and follow Forest Road 276 for six miles to the East Fork Recreation Area.
