Special Weather Statement issued February 8 at 1:57PM AKST by NWS Juneau AK
After a series of shortwaves that brought rain and gusty winds over the past few days, a stronger front will approach southeast Alaska from the west on Tuesday. South to southeast winds will increase through the day Tuesday. Confidence is increasing for windy conditions with strong gusts Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as the front pushes west to east across southeast Alaska. Gales with storm force gusts will be possible ahead and along the frontal passage, especially along north-south oriented channels and along the coastal waters. A period of moderate to heavy rainfall will be possible with the frontal passage, but with the progressive nature of the front, flooding is not expected at this time. Another gale to potentially storm force low will quickly lift northeast into the Gulf and looks to push across southeast Alaska sometime later Wednesday into Thursday, bringing another round of strong gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall. Further details on the high wind and flooding potential for this system will be honed in on in the coming days. Looking further ahead, a cooling trend is favored to commence in the wake of these passing systems by late work week into the weekend. Snow levels will begin to lower and a colder outflow wind pattern could set up by late weekend. This could result in a return of snow for some coastal communities, especially across northern southeast Alaska. Further details on the pattern change and snow potential will be honed as the weekend approaches.

About
Kook Lake Cabin is a remote 16x16-foot A-frame cabin sitting on the west end of Kook Lake, approximately 45 miles northeast of Sitka in the Tongass National Forest. The cabin features one double plywood bunk on the main level and an upstairs sleeping loft accessed by a vertical ladder. A wood stove provides heat, and the cabin includes a table with benches, cooking counter, and basic tools. A small square-bowed skiff with oars is provided for lake access. The cabin is situated in a beautiful stand of spruce and hemlock with a sandy beach in front and flat terrain surrounding it. The area offers excellent fishing opportunities with year-round cutthroat and Dolly Varden in the lake, plus good runs of sockeye salmon in July and August and coho salmon in late August and early September. The 0.7-mile Kook Lake Trail connects the cabin to Forest Road 7540 and the Corner Bay road system, offering access to old logging roads for hiking. The terrain north of the lake gradually rises to 1,500 feet before ascending sharply to alpine, while southern slopes rise steeply to 2,500 feet. Brown bear frequent the area. Access is by floatplane (30 minutes from Sitka or Juneau) or by boat and an 8-mile hike from Corner Bay.
Directions
Accessible by floatplane (30 minutes from Sitka or Juneau) or by boat to Corner Bay and hiking 7 miles on logging road plus 0.7 miles on Kook Lake Trail. The trail is not maintained and crosses through many muskegs, can be very wet, muddy and hard to follow. Located near the eastern shore of Chichagof Island between the outlets of Tenakee Inlet and Peril Strait, about 45 miles northeast of Sitka. Refer to USGS topographic maps Sitka C-3 and C-4.
