About
Thayer Lake Shelter South is a historic backcountry shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the Admiralty Island National Monument, part of the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska. The shelter is a 12' x 10' 3-sided Adirondack-style structure with a dirt floor, located on central Admiralty Island at the south end of Thayer Lake. This primitive shelter provides basic protection from the elements in one of Alaska's most remote wilderness areas. The location offers access to day hiking, lake and pond fishing, swimming, and exceptional wildlife and plant viewing opportunities. Admiralty Island is known for its pristine habitat, varied ecotypes, and healthy wildlife populations, including one of the highest densities of brown bears in North America. Trails connect this shelter to other locations within the monument. Access to Thayer Lake Shelter South is by floatplane only, with a one-way flight time of approximately 40 minutes from Juneau. The remote location and light usage level make this an ideal destination for experienced wilderness campers seeking solitude in Alaska's backcountry. Non-potable water is available from the lake, and visitors must be prepared for completely self-sufficient wilderness camping.
