About
Thayer Lake Shelter South is a rustic three-sided Adirondack-style shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, featuring a 12' x 10' footprint with a dirt floor. Located on central Admiralty Island within the Kootznoowoo Wilderness, the shelter sits at the southern end of pristine Thayer Lake and provides a base for wilderness exploration. The shelter offers extraordinary wildlife viewing opportunities due to Admiralty Island's pristine habitat and healthy wildlife populations, including brown bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, and bald eagles. The 4.7-mile Thayer to Salt Lake Trail begins nearby, gradually descending through spruce-hemlock forest along Freshwater Lake to Salt Lake. Fishing, swimming, and plant observation are popular activities. This is a primitive wilderness facility with no restrooms, no potable water, and no maintained amenities. Campers must bring water purification equipment to treat lake water and pack out all trash. The shelter is free to use with no reservations or permits required.
Directions
Located on central Admiralty Island at the south end of Thayer Lake. Access by floatplane only. One-way flight time from Juneau is approximately 40 minutes. Suggested USGS topo map: Sitka C-2.
